Autistic Burnout

Tomorrow is National Autism Awareness Day.

April is Autism Acceptance Month.

I’ve nearly finished my 80,000 steps and smashed my fundraising target. Thank you so much everyone!

The picture below seems normal, right?

Well....

I do very well at covering up autistic burn out as, for a very long time, I didn’t know that’s what it was.

Under that smiling mask is joint pain, headache, fatigue, temporary memory loss, blurry vision, social discomfort and so much more.

Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t want sympathy or to gripe. Everyone has their problems and deals with it in their own way.

My intention is to make people aware of something which is very often misunderstood, or even denied, by a lot of people.

Words like “lazy” “attention seeking” “faking it” have been thrown my way more times than I can think, mainly in my late teens and early 20s. I was very lucky to have an extremely supportive family around me (and still do!) but imagine if someone doesn’t have that.

It can be caused by so many things. Physical activity, lack of sleep, excess sensory stimulation, change of routine, feelings of failure and many, many more.

We know we can’t avoid these things. Life is as it is. All we need is for people to allow us time and room to regroup and refresh.

No judgement, just time.
